History of Alexandria

City of Alexandria Aerial ViewAccording to the 2014 census, the population of Alexandria, VA was over 150,500. This independent city sits along the western banks of the Potomac River, and is just seven (7) miles from Washington, DC. The first Native Americans settled in Alexandria more than thirteen thousand years ago.

This town is filled with a rich history that has helped to shape the county into what it is today. At the start of the French and Indian War (1755), several thousand soldiers with the Edward Braddock (the British General at the time), set up camp in and around the town of Alexandria. John Carlyle’s home was a meeting place to discuss the strategy of war. The Carlyle House is currently a historical landmark that is open to the public. The “Church in the Woods” was built in 1773. It is also referred to as “Christ Church”, and this house of worship is currently open to the public.

Friendship Firehouse in Alexandria, VA The Friendship Firehouse is now a fascinating museum, but the company was originally founded in 1774.The first public school, known as the Alexandria Academy, opened its doors in 1785. George Washington, the first president of the United States, called Alexandria his home. Before leaving for New York, he had a home on Cameron Street and a family pew at Christ Church. In addition, he and his family spent many hours dining and dancing at the local taverns.

Taverns were also a place that business was conducted and deals were made. Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States also referred to Alexandria as his home, as he lived there just prior to being appointed to the seat of presidency.

In 1785, a self-made business man and the local bar-keeper, constructed what is known as the Gadsby Tavern. Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third President of the United States, often entertained guests at the Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria.Today, this tavern is a museum that is open to the public.

Robert E. Lee (a famous general in the American Civil War) lived in Alexandria with his family from the tender age of four. These men are just a few of the individuals who have added to Alexandria history and its uniqueness. During the War of 1812, a British fleet successfully raided Alexandria, which surrendered without much of a fight. As part of the terms of the surrender, the British were allowed to loot warehouses that stored mainly tobacco, flour, wine, sugar, and cotton.

Between the years of 1828 and 1836, Alexandria, VA was the home base for Franklin & Armfield Slave Market. They sent more than one thousand slaves per year to Mississippi. The City of Alexandria was rezoned in 1852, and in 1870 became an independent county. The portion of Alexandria, that is known today as the “Old Town” was established in 1946, and this is the third historical district in the United States. The historical buildings are the perfect backdrop to the lively, yet contemporary life that the citizens of today enjoy.
