What are dental crowns and bridges?
Dr. Bell uses dental crowns and bridges to restore teeth that are missing, broken, or otherwise in need of serious repair. While they perform similar functions, there are a few fundamental differences between crowns and bridges.
Dental Crowns
Crowns cover the entire surface of your tooth above the gumline. If your tooth is damaged, but the root is still healthy, Dr. Bell may repair the tooth with a crown. He uses porcelain crowns for their strength and aesthetic appeal.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges replace missing teeth with a false crown that’s suspended between a functional crown on either side. Dr. Bell places the functional crowns on the teeth adjacent to your missing tooth, creating a bridge over the space.
When would I need a dental crown?
Porcelain crowns are often the last dental restoration option after a filling. If your tooth is damaged or extremely rotted beyond the scope of a regular filling, Dr. Bell may recommend a crown.
You may need to get a crown if you’re suffering from:
- Severe tooth decay
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- A tooth that needs a root canal
What are the advantages of a dental bridge?
A bridge is an alternative to dentures or dental implants for replacing missing teeth. Bridges bond to your existing teeth permanently, so you don’t have to worry about taking them out or having them move around like dentures. They’re also more affordable than dental implants.

What should I expect from my dental crown or bridge procedure?
First, Dr. Bell examines your teeth to determine what kind of restoration procedure you need. Dr. Bell needs to see you for at least two visits to complete the restoration procedure.
On the first visit, he makes a dental impression. He sends this mold to the lab, where your bridge or crown is created.
About two weeks after the initial visit, you return to the office to have Dr. Bell install your bridge or crown. After this procedure, you leave the office with a beautifully restored smile.
